My son and I had the opportunity to meet Paul for one brief lunch one day last year with his lovely wife Cathy, daughter Ginny and one of his precious grandchildren in Iowa! I immediately felt the warmth in his eyes and the comfort of his smile. Paul will be sadly missed by all who knew him but he will never be gone as long as he lives in the hearts of those who encountered his loving ways. We are so blessed to have had him in our lives and know that no other can do for us what he did and leave the mark that he left. Our memory of him is a treasure. Our hearts and prayers go out to his friends and especially to his family who will surely miss this great man. May GOD give you peace.

I met Paul through Ginny and I knew his Mom Edith through the Chamber of Commerce, we became friends, she always saved me a s seat at the meetings = didn't know Paul personally, but his passing saddens me greatly, because I know he was loved and admired by a lot of people. May God forever hold him in His loving embrace and comfort the family in this time of need.

My first acquaintance with the Richardson Family was nearly forty years ago when I moved to Bath County. One of the great mentors in my life was Rev. Virgil Lyons who would have been Paul's great uncle. It did not take long to realize that through the influence of Virgil Lyons and the Les Richardson Family that so much of the spiritual heritage and civic pride in the Bath County community could be traced to this wonderful family. When I met Paul Howard, I saw in him so many of the virtues that were a part of his family heritage. The allotted space here does not permit me to elaborate on these virtues but I would encourage everyone to read the obituary for Paul. It is passionately written and is a true reflection of the person that Paul was. In my comments here, simply let me say that Paul was a man whose life mattered, who made a difference to all who knew him and he will be so greatly missed by his family, his friends and our Bath County community.

I have known Paul Howard, I guess, all my life. Many times we have to search to find good things to say about those who pass, but that is not the case for the life that Paul Howard lived. There is an old saying that everyone dies, but not everyone lives. Paul Howard battled cancer for years. Although this dreadful disease took away a man who was loved by all who knew him, he fought an admirable fight to the end.
Friends, as many of you know, I have buried too many of my family members over the last several years. I entrusted all of them to Paul Howard at the Richardson Funeral Home. Paul Howard has always been considered a family member to me and my family. My grandfather Williams, both of my sisters, and my father's arrangements were handled by the Richardson's Funeral Home. When my sister, Monica, passed in a car accident, the night before the funeral I spoke with Kathy because Paul Howard was not feeling well. I thanked them for all they did, and to my surprise, the next day at the funeral, there was Paul Howard covered with a blanket and a hat, in the lobby of the funeral home. He asked me to sit down. I asked him why he was out of the house. Long story short, Paul Howard, battling cancer, was worried about how we were. That is who Paul Howard was.
Pretty much the same story, when my father died. Everyone got in the car to leave the cemetery. I looked over and saw Paul Howard sitting in the chairs that we set up around dad's casket. I got out of the car and went over to thank him for everything he has done for my family and how much the Richardson's and the staff at Richardson's Funeral Home has meant to us, in the past few years, where we have had our run of bad luck. Paul Howard smiled and said, "We are family. This is what family does." Then he pointed over to his daughter Ginny and said that she is who I should thank. "I have turned it over to her, now". The pride and confidence coming from Paul Howard sitting there with me that day will always be a lasting memory that I will cherish. Not only leaving my father for the last time, but witnessing another father passing the torch to his daughter, who he had full confidence and pride in knowing she would carry the family business on into the 21st century.
Kathy, Ginny, Paul Ryan and the rest of the Richardson family- our thoughts from the Wells and Williams families are with you tonight and throughout this experience. You guys have always been there during our families' and most of the community's most vulnerable times. Paul Howard earned and deserved all the love that will be bestowed on not only the life he led while on this earth, but also to those who Paul Howard loved and called family. We lost something special this morning, but the 68 years we were fortunate enough to have him in our lives was a blessing that only God could grant. Ricky Lee
