Samuel Stephenson Montgomery, 83, of Owingsville, Kentucky, and formerly of Klamath Falls, Oregon, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2017, at Ridgeway Nursing & Rehabilitation, in Owingsville.

Born December 29, 1933, in Klamath Falls, he was the son of Arthur and Helen Montgomery. He was known as Sam by many of his relatives and close friends. Many knew him as Steve, his preferred name.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur Jr (Bud).,Donald, Anthony (Ing), and David; and his former spouse, Elaine Spoerlein.

Steve is survived by his partner of 30 years, Dave Brokaw; his son Mark Montgomery and his wife Christine; his grandson Eric; and family living in the states of Oregon and Washington.

Steve graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1952. He went on to Southern Oregon University and Oregon State University where he studied Engineering. After school, he joined the Army for a number of years specializing in surveying, drafting, cartographic techniques and photo-interpretation. Later he returned to Oregon State University to study Geography. Steve was an accomplished editorialist and worked for the National Academy of Science in Washington DC. He went on to become a self-employed consultant in Arlington, VA.

Upon retirement, Steve and his partner took up residence on the coast of Oregon in Coos Bay, and then later on a horse farm in Owingsville.

Steve had many hobbies, especially during his retirement, which included wood-working, wood-turning, and playing the piano/keyboard. His most recent love was laboring on the farm, Ty Run Stables with Dave and caring for their four horses.

Steve was soft-spoken, yet eloquent in conveying his thoughts and ideas. He loved to talk with family and friends and they enjoyed his discussions about a wide range of topics. He will be deeply missed.

Steve requested no viewing or funeral. He wished his cremated remains be brought back home to Klamath Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to a favorite charity of your choice.
