Marie Atchison Penick, 93, of Owingsville, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024. Born in Bath County, Kentucky on October 11, 1930 to the late Emmett and Catherine Cline Atchison, Marie grew up in Mt. Summit, Indiana before returning to Kentucky and marrying her husband of over 50 years, the late Ewell Shrout Penick.
Marie was employed as the secretary of the Bath County Extension Office for over 40 years, and during that time was integral to the daily operations of the office. In her free time, Marie enjoyed reading, cooking, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid fan of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team and made sure to never miss an episode of her daily soap operas. A devout Christian, Marie was a member of Bailey’s Chapel Christian Church. Marie will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her sense of humor, and for her unparalleled jam cakes and banana puddings.
In addition to her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Ewell Shrout Penick, of Owingsville, one son, Terry Lee Atchison of Brownsburg, Indiana, and two sisters – Geneva Atchison Davis and Carol Atchison Raines, both of New Castle, Indiana.
Marie is survived by one son, Tim (Ricci) Atchison of New Castle, Indiana, one daughter, Kara Penick Strange of Owingsville, Kentucky, four grandchildren – Ryan (Lora) Utterback of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, Matthew (Jade) Strange of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, Brock (Jessie) Atchison of Lake Zurich, Illinois, and Kaycie Atchison (Anthony Gatch) of Pegram, Tennessee, three great-grandchildren – Reid Atchison of Lake Zurich, Illinois, and Persephone and Artemis Gatch of Pegram, Tennessee, and one sister – Bonni Atchison Manies of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 10 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Gregg Whitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Shrout Cemetery.
