Lois Plymale Obituary

Lois Anne Moore Plymale, age 89, passed away peacefully on March 22 at her home in Owingsville, Ky. She was born in Owingsville on October 28, 1935 to the late John Wesley Moore and late Lillian Palmer Moore. 

Lois is survived by two sons, John T. Plymale (Lysle Betts) and  James M. Plymale (Melinda); one daughter, Martha Plymale Chapman (Eddie); two nieces, Rebecca Moore Geise (Peter) of Tampa, FL and Jennifer Duncan (Chris) of Lake Placid, FL; two grandchildren, Ian Hayes-Plymale and Lewis Betts Foreman (Adam); one great grandchild, Cyrus M. Foreman. 

Additionally she is preceded in death by her brother, Edward C. Moore and her sister, Catherine Moore Hicks.

In addition to family, she is also survived by her dear daughters of choice, Lisa Williams and Theresa Coulter (Sid) and beloved caregivers of the last year: Joyce Vice, Alpha Vice, Mary Elliot, Jessica Hatton, and also the staff and caregivers  at Owingsville Manor.

Lois was a graduate of Berea College with a degree in English. Later she attended Morehead State University where she earned a Masters in Library Science, and a Rank 1 certificate in Curriculum Planning.  She was a life long educator, teaching English in Morrow, Ohio, Chattanooga, Tennessee and Frenchburg, Ky. With her Masters she became a librarian, first at Bethel Elementary School and then at Bath County High School.  In all these settings she encouraged her students to read widely and explore their world as much as possible.                                              

She was a faithful member of the Owingsville United Methodist Church where she taught adult Sunday school for many years, was treasurer and was active with Owingsville United Methodist Women.  Lois was a member of Kentucky Education Association, serving as a delegate to the state and regional meetings. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the national teacher’s honor society.   In Owingsville, she was very active in Bath County Homemakers, serving a term as president, and also in the Owingsville Woman’s Club. 

Lois always cared deeply about civil rights and social justice.  This she expressed by being active in the Bath County Democratic Party.  She also volunteered for many years as an election poll worker and judge. In addition, she served one term on the Owingsville City Council.

Lois was deeply invested in all the arts, especially music, literature, the visual arts and folk/traditional/roots creating.  She encouraged her children, all her students and dear friends to explore the world of creating and follow their leadings where ever they might lead.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 26 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home.

A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with John Plymale officiating.
