Ida Shannon

July 16, 1941 ~ January 29, 2022 (age 80)

Obituary

Ida Lou Shannon, 80, of Owingsville passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, January 29th, surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Ida was born on July 16, 1941 to Arville Silas Ratliff and Glyda Mae Elizabeth Ratliff.  She was raised on Washington Branch and held many treasured memories from her childhood.  Ida could often be heard fondly recounting stories of the people and places “down on White Oak” and the fun times that she had growing up on her family’s farm.

Ida married Lonnie Shannon on September 13, 1968 and they spent the first several years of their marriage traveling throughout the southeast and along the east coast.  The couple returned to Bath County in 1977 and made their home in Owingsville.  They were blessed to have spent 42 happy years together before Lonnie’s passing in 2010.

In addition to being a full time homemaker, for many years Ida provided child care for numerous Bath County families.  She loved every child as if they were her own and nothing brought her more happiness than the visits she received from those children after they left her care.

She was a long time member of the Kendall Springs Church of Christ where she immensely enjoyed the close knit community and friendships she found there.

Ida was a fiercely devoted mother, grandmother and friend.  Family came first and that sentiment was above all, a value that she instilled in those around her.  Her door was always open to anyone who needed a chat, a hot meal, a hug or simply just to sit with someone who loved them.  Her laughter was infectious and her counsel was wise.  She brought joy and warmth to those that knew her.  Ida will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lonnie; one sister, Ruby Viretta Stephens; three brothers, Carlos Ratliff, Raymond Lacy Ratliff, Carl Thomas Ratliff and her loyal canine companion, Millie.

Ida is survived by her son, Lee Kavin Shannon and wife, Jessica; her daughter, Elizabeth Carol Bailey and husband, Barry; her son, Jason Andrew Shannon; her daughter, Jennifer Lynn Ferrell and husband, Joshua; six beloved grandchildren, Ben (Megan) Everman, Taylor  Everman (Austin Kier), Jacob Shannon, Abigail Henderson, Gracie Lou Shannon and Maeli Jae Shannon; one brother, Johnnie Ratliff and two cherished friends, Jerri Highley and Judy Goldie.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 5 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Richardson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel with David Alford officiating. Burial will follow in the Slate Valley Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ben Everman, Zach Vanderpool, Jacob Shannon, Josh Ferrell, Barry Bailey, Charlie Ratliff and Dwayne Purvis.
