Ewell Dailey “Jack” Smoot, Jr., of Owingsville KY, passed away on June 9, 2023 at St. Joseph Hospital in Mt. Sterling, at the age of 87. He was the husband of the late Artie Smoot, and the son of the late Ewell Sr. and Nancye Smoot.
Jack was well-known in the Bath County community. After fulfilling his service in the United States Army, he returned home and served in a variety of roles including teacher, athletic director, and principal at Bath County High School over his long career. He was coach of several of the school’s athletic programs over the years, including the basketball, baseball, and track teams.
After retiring from the school system, he worked for several more years as a sales representative for Balfour Ring Company and Taylor Publishing Companies. He was also the co-owner and proprietor of Arties Antiques (though she always said she couldn’t find good help).
Jack was an active member of the Owingsville Church of Christ, and served the community in many other local civic organizations including the Lion’s Club, the Jaycees, as well as being an Owingsville City councilman.
He is survived by two daughters: Bobbie Jean (Tom) Risner of Jeffersonville Ky., Tina (Ralph) Taylor of Owingsville KY, and a son: Shane (Melissa) Smoot of Owingsville Ky.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, Chip (Jennifer) Hart of Owingsville Ky, Jonathan (Annie) Hart of Owingsville KY, Joshua Risner of Jeffersonville Ky, Amber (Ben) Moore of South Shore Ky, Hannah Smoot of Bellevue Ky, and Cooper Dailey Smoot of Owingsville Ky.
He also has nine great-grandchildren: Chase Hart, Katie Hart, Carter “Jack” Hart, Cole Hart, Claire Hart, Vivian Hart, Oliver Hart, Carson Hart, and Lilly Moore.
Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Artie Turner Smoot, as well his parents, Ewell Smoot, Sr. and Nancye Staton Smoot, and a grandson, Seth Thomas Risner.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 13 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Richardson Funeral Home.
Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14 in the chapel at Richardson Funeral Home with Alton Norman, Bobby Jones and Johnny Botts sharing memories and words of condolence. Burial following in the Owingsville Cemetery.
