Donald R. York, 79, of Lexington, Kentucky passed away Wednesday morning, June 15th at his home in Lexington after a long battle with COPD.
Born to the late Henry David York and Edith Sorrell York on January 30, 1944 in Bath County. Donnie graduated high school in Bath County. In 1964 he joined the United States Navy where he completed four years of service. He carried on some of the qualities and skills acquired from serving, such as being very neat and organized and was always on time for any event. Donnie once said he could not discuss some of the jobs he did while serving but you could tell he was very proud to have served in the Navy.
Donnie moved to Florida where he lived for many years and also North Carolina. He worked in a restaurant and a bank. He then moved back to Lexington, Kentucky and worked in a bank for several years and retired from University of Kentucky.
Donnie enjoyed gardening and cooking. He loved cooking his mom's recipes and trying new ones as well. His hobbies was collecting movies and watching sports on tv. He joined a movie club and collected movies from video stores that were closing out. He now has a collection of over 1000 movies and dvds. Donnie was a fan of basketball, baseball and other sports. One of his favorite teams was Gonzaga and he was a huge fan of U.K. basketball.
Donnie attended Kendall Springs Church of Christ, had a kind and warm personality and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, David (Betty) York, Edwin Ray (Dorothy) York, Wayne York; four sisters, Ruby (Parker) Bristow, Birdie (Jimmy) Moore, Naomi (William) Copher, Joyce (Tommy) Denton; three nieces, Sheryl Manns, Danita Richardson, Pamela Jones; four nephews, Mike York, Jeff York, Joe York and Steve Copher.
He is survived by one brother, Gary (Mary) York Sr. and one sister, Rhonda Davis, both of Owingsville; several nieces, nephews, friends and family.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 19 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Richardson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Reverend Ron Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Longview Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Mark Dailey, Parker Bristow, Daryl Bristow, Mitchell Smith, Jason York and Gary York Jr..
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Moore, Randy York, Glen Berger, Derek Rogers, JR York and Casey Lyons.
