Charles Reed Fugate, age 82 of Mt.Sterling, passed away on January 8, 2025 at Saint Joseph Main in Lexington, Kentucky after an extended stay. Reed was born in Breathitt County, Kentucky to Lewis and Delphia (Mann) Fugate. They moved to Mud Lick in Bath County when Reed was 12 years old. He was a good man and loved all people. Wherever he was at he would talk to the people, it didn’t matter if he knew them or not. He loved to talk, always asking about their family. He loved to talk about Kentucky Basketball and also loved to play basketball, playing in high school, on church teams and pick up ball for many years. He also played softball and was a pitcher. He grew up in Mudlick and after practice he would walk home from Owingsville if he couldn’t catch a ride. He loved coaching kids in basketball and baseball. He coached his son Ricky and continued to coach his grandsons, Nathan and Clint. He took pride in teaching his players and loved all the kids. He was so sad that he wasn’t able to coach his youngest grandson Braden due to health issues. Reed was also a great song writer haven written over 200 songs. He retired from A.O.Smith in Mt.Sterling after 37 years. He also worked at Karrick’s Chevron, farmed and helped a lot of people in tobacco. He loved his cows. He took pride in providing for his family. He was a member of the Sugar Grove Christian Church and when he was no longer able to attend church he watched Brother Robbie Shrout and Brother Lowell Rice on Facebook and watched WLJC on the television.
Reed is survived by the love of his life of 61 years, Shella Sue Karrick Fugate, one son Ricky Lewis Fugate, three grandsons Nathan Lewis Fugate (Julia Hutchinson) of Owingsville KY., Clinton Wyatt Fugate (Savannah Carolyn) of Catlettsburg KY and Braden Reed Fugate also of Owingsville Ky. Also 3 Great Granddaughters Adalind Grace, Caroline Wren, Willow Rose Fugate: also 2 step grand children Lilly and John Robert Staton also of Owingsville, KY; One brother Clyde Fugate of Batavia Ohio, several nieces and nephews and a special sister in law Pauline Karrick.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Arvil Fugate, three sisters Emma Florence Becraft, Thelma Ziegler and Jewell Hughes and three other sisters that passed away before he was born of when he was young.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 14th from 5:00 for family and 6:00 to 8:00 for friends. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 15th in the chapel of the Richardson Funeral Home with Brother Robbie Shrout and Brother Lowell Rice officiating. Burial will follow in the Owingsville Cemetery.
